ASYURA CELEBRATIONS

Today is the 10th of Muharram known as "Asyura" (Arabic meaning "the tenth"). Muharram is the first month in the Islamic calendar. To the Muslims, today is special because according to history, many important events happened to various prophets on this day. One was the prophet Moses' exodus from Egypt. Another one was when Allah saved prophet Abraham from the fire. Just to mention a couple. So we commemorate the day by fasting, entertaining orphans and the poor, visiting the sick and the like.

The Islamic Women Welfare Organization to which I am a member, organized an event in aid of young orphans. 35 children from in and around our neighbourhood were gathered. There was a special reading of the Holy Quran and a short narration of the happenings on Asyura day by our teacher, Ustaz Rahim, lest we forget. Then the children lined up to receive blessings from the many members present. They were also given some monetary donations together with a 'goody-bag' to take home. We also donated to a member whose house got caught in a fire recently. Towards the end of the event, the Committee members visited another member who was recovering from a heart surgery.
