I've always wanted to be a teacher. When we were young, my sister and I plus the neighborhood children would play 'school'. And guess who would be the Head Teacher? With the ruler or cane in hand, I would go through my act like real! When I graduated and became a REAL teacher, there was no cane or ruler in hand, naturally. I enjoyed every single moment with my students - be they the little kindergartens ones, those in primary schools, in high schools or in colleges. I was fortunate to experience teaching the different levels of schooling, even at times for a week or so. I enjoyed most being with the little ones because they were so natural, innocent, and appreciative. I also liked teaching the slow learners in high school because to me they were sincere and also appreciate what the teacher was trying to do. One student I remember would wipe his seat before I sat on his chair. Another one would offer his ear so that I could twist it when he could not answer my question. When they saw me outside school, they would greet me with "Cikgu, cikgu!" (Teacher, teacher). Not every student liked me of course. One boy wrote on the toilet wall "I hate the Art Teacher!" But now when our path crossed, we would have a good laugh thinking of what happened. P.S. He likes me now. Hee3. . .When I was schooling at the French Convent from kindergarten to Form 5, I was a happy student, a clown sometimes, 'naughty' so much so the Reverend Mother made me a Prefect when I was in Form 4 so as to discipline me. I did well in school, thanks to all my teachers.
So to all the Teachers out there, be you retired or just starting or in the midst of your noble career, "HAPPY TEACHERS' DAY" and persevere and God bless all of you.
Selamat Hari Guru !
