THE SINGER SEWING MACHINE

Another treasure uncovered from the golden days of yesteryear . . . this ancient Singer sewing machine. It belonged to my parents when they were involved in the tailoring business. Finally it can see the light of day, having been hidden from human eyes, for I guess about 50 odd years in the store below the house. No . . . . I'm not going to rid of it - rust and all. It had served my parents well during their heyday. I remember having a go at the wheel in my teenage years, earning 50 cents each time I completed sewing for one kebaya.

It is a special machine used to machine fine 'holes' at the seams. It was known as "jahit tebuk lubang" or in English "breeding''. I don't know if that is correct. Anyway, it used 2 ordinary needles and one thick one in between the two to make the tiny holes. The machine was one of two in Malacca town then, thus it was very popular. As I look at it now, I can picture Mary, the lady given the duty to tend to the machine, concentrating diligently completing one kebaya after another.

I'll send the machine for a make-over and have a special place for it in my new renovated house. At least I'll still have a connection with my past. Thanks Bapak. Thanks Mak.

Below, some close-up pictures of the "grand old lady".

Yes . . . I've done my share . . . .

Salam Puteri Hang Li Poh
Wow! That machine is indeed a very valuable treasure! It does deserve a very special place in your house. Subhanallah. Pastinya itu penghubung kasih & ingatan yg amat 'konkrit' dgn arwah emak & bapa. Ia antara simbol perjuangan mereka. The other one might be gone, & so yours is the only one left in the whole of Melaka, & may be Malaysia.
