PETRA - The Jewel That Is Jordan

Saw this car-plate at the King Hussein Automobile Museum. However, I feel it is most appropriate to describe PETRA - "THE Jewel that is Jordan." The Arabs called it "Al-Betra".

Many have written about it, many have taken pictures and videos about it, thus if you are interested, you can surf the net and the YouTube to get to know this beautiful gift to Jordan. I've taken several videos but somehow or other I couldn't get it loaded onto this blog. Help anybody?

Well, I was so looking forward to my visit to Petra, ever since I came across the name in my Art Civilization studies many, many, many moons ago :) This ancient city is about 5 hours drive south of Amman, well-hidden behind huge rose-coloured rocks. From the point of entry, we had to walk about 3 km. before entering through a tall, narrow gap between the rocks to reach the spot that you see above. Yes there were horses, horse carts and mules for transportation but the experience of walking itself, albeit slowly was something to be savoured.

The entrance to the site shows huge pictures of the king.

And so began the looooong trek ....

... and we walked and walked ...

... past some school children 'taking-five' ...

and on and on, still a looong way to go ...
Some lucky ones got to ride on horse-carriages (20 JOD = RM100 one way!)

o.k. we'll take five too . . still not in sight!

hey... what's that light between the rocks?

We're almost there, folks! Will continue later, o.k?

'ilal leqaa' wa ma' as-salaamah! (See you later and good-bye!)

Ever since I learned about Petra from pictures and literature about it I have imagined that visiting it would be a dramatic event. Your lead up to your account of it captures that drama, and I look forward to your narrative of Petra itself.

By the way, whether you planned it that way or not, the tilt of that photograph of you on the donkey in your latest post does reinforce what you said about the precariousness of your ride on it :)

Hi Louis,

It was precarious on the donkey for this Malaysian, no kidding!
