Thousands shaken by tremors following earthquake in Sumatra

KUALA LUMPUR: Thousands of workers in several cities in the peninsular fled their high-rise offices as tremors shook the buildings following an earthquake in Sumatra.

Tourists in hotels were also affected.

Australian James Rich, 33, said he was taking a shower when he felt the tremors in his room in Renaissance Hotel.

So THAT was what happened yesterday while I was typing away at the computer! At that moment the idea of an earthquake never crossed my mind. I had a strange feeling, felt slightly dizzy, surprised to see the shaking red seat, looked around and thought some super natural power was imposing its prescence in my room! So naive . . . Fancy feeling the wave across the miles from Padang.

Suddenly remembering I still have several cousins and aunts residing in and around Padang, I called a cousin, Buyong, in K.L. to find out. Thank God, I was told the families are o.k. except their houses were slightly damaged. An old aunt who is bed-ridden, Etek Edan, got a shock when the cupboard fell onto her but luckily she was saved by a chair between her and the cupboard. Furthermore the area where they are staying is quite a distance from the disaster area at Periaman. I pray for the safety of all residents there.
